Like many animals who will come to us, Gunther's story before arriving at the Haven isn't a happy one. He was purchased, along with a female pig, for the purpose of breeding. The farmers wanted to sell the piglets and believed they could do this and make a good profit. They didn't realize rescue and shelters are already full of dumped potbelly pigs who were sold as "teacups" or "micro-minis" who grew much larger than they owner was told to expect. After having a litter, the pigs escaped their pen and for months roamed the surrounding fields and woods. Apparently, the farmers made no attempt to catch them.
Eventually, due to complaints from neighboring land owners about the pigs, and a warning from animal control, the farmer grew frustrated and shot and killed the mother pig, leaving Gunther and his piglets. After hearing this story, a woman nearby named Lesley, who has other rescue pigs, was able to catch and contain the two babies (now named Bonnie and Clyde). The farmers were finally able to catch Gunther and stuck him in a dog kennel before finally relinquishing him to Lesley later that week. With help from amazing people, Gunther found his home at The Haven. And he is showered with cheerios (his favorite) every day!
